Playfight by Julia Grogan
Under their tree, three fifteen year-old girls, Keira, Zainab, and Lucy, wrestle with sex, shame, and growing up at different paces. It starts with a game and a dead possum. It ends with someone getting hurt.
Fast, funny, and unfiltered, Playfight hurls us into a world where boundaries blur and expectations collide. A viral video, awkward first times, and friendship stretched to breaking — these are the milestones of a coming-of-age that’s as raw as it is dangerous.
Written in the aftermath of the “rough sex” defence, Julia Grogan’s award-winning debut isn’t here to judge or offer easy answers. Instead, Playfight asks what happens when no one teaches you how to look after yourself — and you have to figure it out with just your mates, your instincts, and the internet.
An Edinburgh Festival smash hit, Playfight shines a vivid light on adolescent desire in a landscape of rising sexual violence.
Playfight was originally presented by Grace Dickson Productions and Theatre Uncut at Roundabout as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2024, before touring to Bristol Old Vic, Belgrade Theatre Coventry and Soho Theatre in 2025.
