To accompany Silo's production of seven methods of killing kylie jenner by Jasmine Lee-Jones, director Keagan Carr Fransch has prepared a list of seven offers - seven texts that speak to, inform, and deepen, the messages within the play. Whether you read them in preparation for the show, or afterwards while reflecting on the play, we highly encourage you to dive deep into the texts listed below.
"seven methods of killing kylie jenner is a searing work in which playwright Jasmine Lee-Jones both boldly and tenderly interrogates the specific and nuanced experience of the Black woman living in the modern world.
These seven offers are an invitation to in turn interrogate your own relationship to the Black womxn in your life - or to your own Black womanhood - by tracing the lived experience of the womxn whose stories are told here through novel, non-fiction, and play. The genres of these seven offers are varied and range from self-love, critical race analysis and young adult fantasy, to sexuality and self-acceptance; but their common thread is that they are all written by Black women, and all examine, agitate and re-engage with what it means to be a Black woman in the world, past and present.
One of the many things that colonization and the resulting African diaspora has taken from us is the ease of finding community, and breathing into the respite of shared experience. I hope that, if nowhere else, Black womxn in Aotearoa can find it in the words of Jasmine's play, and in the pages of these books."
