Kia ora koutou,
In 2022 we are marking our 25th year by celebrating a key feature of Silo’s DNA – presenting what we think is the most exhilarating, challenging and daring new writing. Championing next-generation theatre-makers and bold ideas has always been a central artistic pillar of the company, and the multiplicity of these voices continues to expand, evolve and teach us new things.
Not going to lie, it's a pretty weird time to be leading a theatre company. I’m curious about what theatre, storytelling and our culture more broadly will look like as we emerge from this thing that has changed our world. To assume it won't leave an indelible mark feels naive but I’m hopeful that alongside the loss there will also be transformation: an opportunity to throw out old ways that no longer serve us, and a chance to create new possibilities for innovation and renewal.
Art-making has always been about imagining a better world, and our plays in 2022 have a lot to say about that. These works are fractured, genre-bending, adventurous and pulsing with restless energy. They are stories that take aim at ossified power structures refusing to budge and make way for new ways of seeing. These are voices that point to the future and herald a new generation of theatre-makers who want to change the shape of the world.
After a year of creating digital theatre offerings, we are so excited to get back on stage and in the room together. I think the theatre is quite literally a magical place, a sacred space that stimulates courage, creates understanding and ignites our imagination. To say we can't wait to see you at the theatre in 2022 is a massive understatement, I hope you’ll join us for a year of absolute magic.
