The Defendant

World Premiere

It’s October 2012. Ewen Macdonald has been acquitted for the murder of Scott Guy — and in a motel room in Rotorua, his defence lawyer Greg King is preparing for a new case when he receives a visit from one of the motel’s maintenance workers.

Drawing on the events leading up to King’s suicide, Dan Musgrove’s The Defendant imagines an alternate version of the lawyer’s final days. Troubling and profound, it presents a complex portrait of the passionate and caring man who defended some of the most notorious criminals in Aotearoa — and who believed in our shared humanity, even at its darkest hours.
