Jacques Brel wrote music rich with a mid-20th century European sensibility that still manages to be timeless. He wrote over 300 songs in his lifetime; his music has been performed by legends including David Bowie, Nina Simone, Leonard Cohen and Martha Wainwright. Dark, sardonic, passionate, witty, revolutionary – his musical narrative forms a life-affirming take on the human condition.

In 2005, Silo’s first celebration of his work triggered a box office frenzy. Not for love or money could you get a seat. This new production, specifically created for the mighty Concert Chamber, will see Brel’s kaleidoscope of lives lived retreated in a unique mashup of theatre and contemporary music, with a kickass band led by wunderkind Leon Radojkovic.

Profound. Intimate. Bold. Cabaret noir.

There is a cruel beauty to all his songs; they seduce you with gorgeous melodies, then sting you with a vicious twist.

THE LISTENER

Brel’s songs are a potent mixture of romanticism and cynicism, world-weariness and jaunty whimsy. In the darkling world conjured, the joys of love are rich but fleeting and life a mad but dangerous waltz.

If we only have love

To embrace without fears

We will kiss with our eyes

We will sleep without tears

JACQUES BREL

When you write a song, most of the words you use are in black and white, and then, from time to time, you use one that's in colour. These words in colour are a part of ourselves, because we give them a meaning. If you like, we give them a third dimension.
